Analysing practical information. (Florida holiday guide)
This week in English, we have looked at a travel guide for Florida, we have looked at all the different features that had been used in the guide. It was interesting t0 spot the layouts and text which were used.
The purpose of practical information is just basically telling the reader facts and important information for when they go on their travels to Florida. In the opening of this information, the text is very persuasive, the reason for this is to persuade the reader to go on holiday. The text also uses hyperbole to try and entertain the reader. This is another way to persuade the reader to go on holiday also. The guide explains to the reader about Visas, Custom Allowances, Tourist Information, Admission Charges, Opening Times, Traveling With Children, Senior Citizens, Etiquette, Travelers With Disablities And Electrical Appliances. They have also included a directory on the side. All of this information is all facts.
There is a little use of deictic expressions. It is telling a story of what Florida is like, for example, 'informal lifestyle and excellent facilities make traveling with youngsters a real pleasure.' This is a typical thing a guide would do. Writers of guides are mainly very formal, the reason for this is because telling information doesn't need to be persuasive, the information given are all facts so it needs to be straight to the point. Telling the reader what there is, not what could be there. For example, 'Dress in Florida is casual.' The guide could be including some personal prounouns, but not actually involving it in the text, but because of the opening being persuasive, it is giving off a vibe that everyone will love it in Florida, especially children.
The layout on the guide has been designed in a certain way because of the amount of text given. The text is in columns, but the text is also in different sections, to make the reader understand the guide and to make it clear. Above each section, there are bold subtitles to show clearly wat the section of the text is about, but also helps the reader to find the information they need quicker. This is a huge help when traveling. On the right hand side, there is a directory of useful numbers, just in case they are needed. For example, 'Australia, 1601 Massachusetts Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20036, (202) 797-3000.' The guide has also included recongniseable features. They have a picture of a disabled badge 'Accessible to wheelchairs.' There are quite a range of big clear pictures spread around the guide, all the pictures are linked to the text given. The text is very clear and seperated, this helps include a lot of information.
There isn't any emotion in the text, except for the opening paragraph which shows a little excitement. The guide is too formal for emotion.
